Midnight has passed into my favorite time of night, where I might be spilling out of a club with friends, skin flushed from the dancing and the heat and then from the cold, cold air, skirt twisted, head all up in a cloud, giggling and stumbling a bit, making our way to the only all-night diner for omelettes and bacon and toast with loads of hot coffee, sugar & cream, more laughter, a ride home, and a warm bed to fall into… or maybe I’m in a car, driving through the darkness, the lights flashing by in time to the music, lost in thought, always searching for something …or I’m happily at home with a glass of wine, rented movies, music on the stereo, catching up with friends, good books nearby, quiet quiet quiet, dreaming my dreams…
It rains on, in pitiable fits and starts all evening, but it rains nonetheless. Few things are lovelier than the sound of rain patting against the pavement and teasing the leaves off of the trees. The skies gave up their secrets today in a show of precipitation, and now the air is clean, cool, brisk and demands both a wool sweater and a good, warm coat.
